2002: CPPCC members submit 347 proposals

Members of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, have submitted 347 proposals by Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for Proposal Office of the Fifth Session of CPPCC's Ninth National Committee said most of the proposals focus on such hot issues as the impact of China's entry into the World Trade Organization, the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Western Development Strategy and environmental protection and ecological construction.

Most of the proposals were submitted to the office in letters, and the remaining ones in floppy disks and through E-mails.

Jin Danjun, an official in charge of the office, said the proposals are expected to be handled before the end of July according to relevant regulations. Selected proposals will be sent to some government departments for reference.

CPPCC set up the 51-member office on February 28.

More than 2,000 CPPCC members are in Beijing for the Fifth Session of CPPCC's Ninth National Committee, which is scheduled to open Sunday.
