One Year after WTO Accession

WTO satisfied with China's IPR protection drive

China is driving forward its efforts to fulfill its World Trade Organization promises by laying down further protection on intellectual property rights.

Officials from the State Intellectual Property Office said latest drives have brought success and the efforts are to receive appraisal from the WTO.

One year after China joined the WTO, the country has gradually been steering its intellectual property rights policy closer to international standards. Regulations such as the patent and trademark laws were revised and those departments concerned also tightened their operations to bust lawbreakers.

These efforts are now reaping rewards. The number of applicators for patents has increased by over 10 percent so far this year. Tian Lipu, vice director of State Intellectual Property Office said: "The WTO recently reviewed China's implementation of over twenty agreements including intellectual property rights' protection. And they showed satisfaction in our efforts to improve property rights. "

Despite the progress, Tian Lipu expressed concern over core technologies and patented products in high-tech fields.

He said China still had long way to go to catch up with some developed countries.

He added that in the coming years, the booming high-tech sector should give rise to more efforts to use and protect property rights.
