One Year after WTO Accession

Survey: WTO membership a boost to business climate

A year has passed since China joined the World Trade Organization. A nationwide survey released on Friday indicates that most Chinese entrepreneurs think domestic and foreign markets have been favorable to their businesses.

The survey was conducted by a Chinese entrepreneur research system, with a sample of over 3,500 business leaders from various sectors.

Over one-third of the respondents say China's WTO entry has had a positive impact on their business, while less than one-fifth say it hasn't.

"One year on, we can now say that the advantages of China's WTO membership outweigh the disadvantages. WTO membership has provided ample opportunities for Chinese enterprises and the economy at large," said Yao Jingyuan, spokesman of National Bureau of Statistics.

The survey results contradict widely-held fears that WTO membership would in the short term do more harm than good to some Chinese industries. Economic analysts attribute the better-than-expected performances of some businesses to sufficient preparation and adaptation to a changed market.
