The CCTV Cup is a nationwide English speaking contest. In June of 2002, CCTV and the FLTRP drafted an agreement on co-sponsoring the contest, which kicked off the organizing procedures.
All the participants come from universities across the entire country. The preliminary contests were organized by the foreign language departments of every university, and the quarterfinals were organized by the provincial Foreign Language Teaching and Research Committee, which is also responsible for liaison work.
In September, the CCTV Cup held its first organizing conference. Sheng Yilai, the director of the Overseas Service Center of China Central Television; Li Pengyi, president of the FLTRP; Yang Zhizhong, president of the College English Teaching and Research Association of China; and heads of the College English Teaching and Research Committees from about 30 provinces were all present.
The conference detailed the specific arrangement of the contest, and also stipulated the procedures, agenda, evaluation criteria, awards presentation and many other issues.
Meanwhile, the Contest Organizing Committee, as well as the Contest Secretariat, was also established. In the following two months, the preliminary contests were held. Interest was high and the Contest Secretariat received many inquiries for consultation and registration.
From now to the end of November, every province will hold its quarterfinals. So far, four provinces have completed their quarterfinals, deciding the contestants for the semi-finals in Beijing.
The four are Henan, Xinjiang, Hunan and Chongqing, and the top three contestants from the remaining provinces will be decided in the following two weeks.
At the beginning of December, all semi-finalists will gather in Beijing, and go all out for the final glory!
