APEC Leaders Find Common Ground on Terrorism

Economic leaders attending the APEC forum in Shanghai have found common ground in their opposition to terrorism. Zhu Bangzao, the spokesman for the Chinese Delegation, made the assessment after President Jiang Zemin held bilateral talks with many of his counterparts Saturday. The spokesman also outlined China's position on a future Afghan government.
The Chinese spokesman said there was widespread consensus among the economic leaders that the APEC gathering is vitally important to cooperation and an economic recovery.
He said the leaders have been impressed by China's economic growth and want to expand bilateral cooperation with the country.
Zhu Bangzao also said terrorism has become an important issue at the forum and a joint-declaration on opposition to threat will be released after tomorrow's informal leaders' meeting.
Zhu Bangzao, spokesman of the Chinese Delegation, said, "Leaders have shared identical common ground on anti-terrorism. Although there are some differences, the common ground is identical."
The Chinese spokesman said China would firmly oppose terrorism, not only as a member of the United Nations' security council, but wherever it can play a role.
On the question of Afghanistan's future, Zhu Bangzao said the answer should be an Afghan solution, broad-based, and representing all interests. The plan also needs the recognition of the international community and the involvement of the United Nations.
