China sees rapid development of road tunnels   2002-11-06 17:30:04 China has the longest road tunnels in the world, and in fact is one of the fastest－developing countries in terms of transport. Officials at China's Ministry of Communications have been discussing the situation at an International Seminar on Tunnel and Road Technology. Since the adoption of the reform and opening－up policy, highway transport in China has been changing tremendously. China had about 17 hundred road tunnels with mileage of around 630 kilometers by the end of 2001. 155 more kilometers of tunnels will be built before 2010. Experts and scholars from 25 countries attended the meeting. They will exchange their views on designing, building and operating road tunnels, as well as advanced technology in road traffic and transport.
