China has become the number one country in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), surpassing the United States for the first time. This is according to survey results released Monday by A.T. Kearney.

Paul A. Laudicina, managing director of Kearney's Global Business Policy Council, indicates that while the power of most nations to attract investment is declining, China's FDI is continuing to grow.

According to the company, several factors contributed to China's number one position. They include its populous market, continued economic growth, sound investment environment and WTO membership.

The company also points out that China is not only a recipient of FDI, but also an investor. Last year, the top 12 Chinese state-owned businesses invested some 30 billion US dollars overseas. The company said, to maintain its advantage, China needs to further intensify infrastructure construction and improve business environment.
