Beijing wins bid to host 2008 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the 2008 Olympics Games to Beijing on Friday, July 13, 2001 in Moscow.

Beijing won in the second round of the ballot after amassing 56 votes, a majority which ensured its honor to host the 2008 Games. Toronto got 22 votes, Paris 18 and Istanbul 9 in the second round. Osaka was eliminated in the first round on 6 votes. Beijing garnered 44 votes against Toronto's 20, Istanbul's 17 and Paris' 15. 105 of the 122 IOC members voted in Friday's secret ballot.

Thirteen IOC members from the countries of candidate cities were not allowed to vote. Samaranch couldn't vote either.
