JAMES CHAU 鍛ㄥ緩鎴is the morning and lunchtime presenter of CCTV News and World Wide Watch. Since joining the station in February 2004, he has anchored major stories including the annual sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). In addition, he has presented live studio coverage of government press conferences on issues ranging from the treatment of the bird flu virus to the protection of intellectual property rights in China.

Chau joined CCTV from Hong Kong-based Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB Pearl), where he was a reporter and anchor for the English-language channel's news and financial bulletins. During this period, he covered Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao's first overseas tour to the US, Singapore and Malaysia, where Chau also interviewed Defence Minister and current Deputy Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak. When SARS hit Asia and spread throughout the world, he travelled to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok for UN and APEC meetings, as well as to Geneva for Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi's visit to the World Health Organisation.

Shortly after his television journalism career began, he was assigned to accompany Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-Hwa to the White House for the first face-to-face talks with the newly elected US president, George W. Bush. Later, in San Francisco, he interviewed the Tung Chee-Hwa, as the International Olympic Committee announced Beijing's successful bid to host the 2008 Summer Games.

In the days following September 11th 2001, Chau was in London to file global reaction to the terrorist attacks in the US while, a few months later, he went to the Middle East to report on China's long awaited entry to the World Trade Organisation. In other assignments, he travelled to Shanghai for the first direct flight since 1949 between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland.

Born in London in December 1977, he has contributed to the Evening Standard and the Sunday Mirror. As News Features Editor of the Cambridge University paper, Varsity, he conducted in-depth interviews with Lord Snowdon, photographer and designer; David Puttnam, Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire film producer; John Simpson, BBC war correspondent; Rosa Monckton, confidante of Diana, Princess of Wales; and a sixtieth birthday special with the former King of Greece, Constantine II.

Now based in Beijing, Chau says moving to Asia is a natural choice since he comes from a family with roots in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. He is a graduate of Cambridge University and King's College London and studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music. He became a Freeman of the City of London in 1999.

His first book will be published next year.
