Medical workers on disease frontline
   CCTV.COM   2003-04-25 09:04:04

Doctors and nurses are soldiers on the frontline of the medical battle. Armed with their medical skills and more importantly, their courage and sense of responsibility, they're in the fight of life and death. CCTV reporter Wang Chunhui take a look at the life of these medical workers.

In one of the Beijing hospitals that treat SARS patients, there is a small special ceremony held to celebrate the recovery of Xiao Shi. It was not until the doctors and nurses took their masks off that Xiao Shi could see the faces of the people who saved his life. Doctor Jin Ronghua gave him a hug of congratulations, but the work of Doctor Jin and his colleagues is far from over. All of the more than 80 doctors in the hospital are still working overtime.

Dr. Jin Ronghua at Beijing You'an Hospital, said: "Patients in serious condition have to use bedpans. We have to help them and clean them up. It's normal for us to work over 14 hours, and we often forgot to eat."

Most of the doctors and nurses have been confined in the hospital for more than a month without going home. The only contact they have with their families is by phone. "Every time, I have to keep my calls short. If I say too much, my parents will start crying," Dr. Jin added.

The extraordinarily tough work has not discouraged other doctors and nurses, either. Doctor Jin showed us a long list of doctors and nurses who have volunteered to share the burden.

The same story is happening in all 6 hospitals designated for SARS treatment. Let’s follow Doctor Li Xingwang at Ditan hospital for a look at life in quarantine.

According to Dr. Li, “The medical staff working inside wear goggles, double masks and shoe covers. When they leave, they put their quarantine clothes and everything else they wear here. They're disposable, but we still use special sterilization. Staff must have their noses disinfected if they have long contact with a patient."

Dr. Li said: "I saw that some of the medical staff sat there, crying. I fully understand their feeling. They're not worried about themselves, they're worried about their families. They think they can do little for them right now."

After only 15 minutes, a mask made Wang Chunhui feel very uncomfortable. You can just imagine how these doctors and nurses feel wearing a much thicker mask for half a day. But that's probably the least of their troubles. Hundreds of these medical staff are risking their lives working days and nights, giving their patients not only good care but also the courage and confidence to overcome the disease.

A recovering SARS patient gave Wang a V for victory at the quarantine window. It gave us hope that we'll win the fight against SARS.
