To realize the goal of building a well-off society in an all round way, the most important task and most difficult part lies in rural areas. At the ongoing session of the National People's Congress, deputies are brainstorming for effective ways to develop the rural economy and increase farmers' incomes.

The deputies said although developing rural economy remains the most challenging task, the rural areas also see the greatest potential for development and the farmers have a great many opportunities at hand.

"60 percent of the population live in the rural areas. Their living standard is remarkably lower than those in the urban areas. Only when the farmers' income has been increased can their purchasing power be strengthened. Only in this way can domestic demand be really expanded," said Yang Shaojun, NPC deputy.

Deputies also offer suggestions on cultivating new growth point in rural economy including further developing farm produce with high-tech content and high added value.

"The problem is not that farmers cannot produce enough produce but that they cannot find outlets to sell the produce or that they cannot sell at a good price. I suggest that more efforts be made to train a contingent of farmer salesmen. Farmers' income can be increased when various distribution channels are secured," said Tan Huizai, NPC deputy.

Deputies also called for increased government investment in rural infrastructure construction and compulsory education in the countryside. They also said farmers should be better trained to cope with issues in the current market economy and build up their credibility.
