NPC deputies from Hong Kong and Macao SARs who have already arrived in Beijing for the First Session of the 10th National People's Congress have placed high expectations on the session. They hope the session will make progress on substantial issues including the strengthening of the supervisory role of the NPC deputies.

The majority of the 48 NPC deputies from Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions arrived in Beijing Sunday. Nearly one-third of them are new faces. The deputies voiced their expectations for the session soon after their arrival at the airport.

"The government report and the reports from the NPC and CPPCC have all touched on the issue of inadequate NPC supervision in many areas. I feel that the NPC's supervisory role is not strong enough. That is mainly because legislation on the issue is yet to be worked out and promulgated. I hope the upcoming session will make new progress in this area," said a NPC deputy.

"There are many things that need to be done at the session. They should include strengthening the reform of state-owned enterprises, rationalizing the agricultural structure and improving the legal system," said a NPC deputy.

"I am concerned about the economic growth of the motherland as well as some issues concerning the well-being of ordinary people, such as farmers," said a NPC deputy.

The First Session of the 10th NPC is scheduled to open in Beijing on Wednesday.
