Developing countries are backing Shanghai's bid to host the 2010 World Expo, saying it will be a significant coup for other developing nations.

Alberto Blanco Silva, Cuban consul general to Shanghai, said all the World Expos had been held in developed countries since the event was first launched 150 years ago.

He noted that China was the largest developing country and if it won its bid to host the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, it would be a victory for all developing countries.

"We are confident that Shanghai will win the right to host the event and Cuba will spare no effort in supporting Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo," said Silva.

Juan. C. Rios, Peru consul to Shanghai said, "Every country has its unique advantage, either in economy or culture." He stressed that the World Expo provided the best opportunities to developing countries to present their "national image" to the whole world.

"Developing countries should play a more active part on world platforms like the World Exposition," said Rios.
