Football
Hi, here we are again, learning more English. Welcome to outdoors at this soccer field. What is the name of this game, anyway? In some countries, it’s called football, and in some countries, it’s called soccer. But in China, people love it, Zuqiu, right? So here we are today, filming some of the foreign children from their Foreign Children Soccer League. And I have two friends’ right here who are going to explain the difference.

I play football on the football patch.

I play soccer on the soccer ball field.

So the difference is: soccer on a soccer field, football on a football patch. That’s British.

This is the shape of an American football. But it’s not the football we’ll play today. Football we’ll play today is what I call in America, a soccer ball.

So if we’re here today teaching words about soccer, we have to talk about your clothing. What are you boys wearing? What is this?

Well, this is my uniform, my shirt and shorts.

Yeah, and what’s another word for shirt?

  Jersey

Jersey and what are this on your legs, Hellas?

It’s a shin guard and you put them on socks or woolen.

Here me. What’s special about these soccer shoes?

Well, if you look, they are fat on their bottom, so you don’t slip if you are running.

  That’s good.

Here are soccer shoes. They are called cleats.

  This is called a jersey.

While playing a soccer match, you should wear shin guards and socks. These are soccer shoes, on the bottom are cleats. There are two kinds of dribbling. In basketball, there’s dribbling. And in soccer, there’s driveling. So what is dribbling? Brand’s going to show us. You talk.

Ok, this is dribbling for football.

  This is dribbling for soccer.

So William, what would you call all the American positions on the team? Positions.

Well, there are forwards, halfbacks, fullbacks and goalies.

Ah, this is different from the same positions in British English. They’re strikers, mid-field, defense and goalkeeper.

So it is looking confusing. Two words for every single position.

Now we’re going to hear about some of the positions the kids play on the soccer team.

  Thrill, what do you play?

  I play defense.

And Niki, what do you play?

  I play defense as well.

  What’s about you, Jeremy?

I usually play goalie or mid-field.

  Christian, what do you play?

  I usually play in fullback.

And Weeker, what do you play?

  I usually play center halfback.

As you can see, our coaches and referees are teaching boys and girls the correct way to play. In a professional game, a soccer match lasts about 90 minutes, and it’s divided into two halves. There is one 15-minute break in-between the two. Many of the terms you already know from what we think soccer in China. I’m sure you know corner kick, kick from the corner. I’m sure you know throwing. We throw the ball in from a side.

If there is a tie or the draw, and there is no clear winner, the game goes into overtime, which is a 30-minute period. If there’s no clear winner after that, then there’s penalty kicks. Each team get 5 penalty shots, and you determine the winner at this point.

Hi, this is my friend Cristi Curkens, who is one of the organizers of our Children’s League. She’s also one of the coaches.

Hi, I coach the kindergarten and first-grade, 5and 6 years old. I’m a volunteer. All the people here are volunteer, coaches and referees. And they give their time in. They don’t ask money. There’re about 300 kids in our League, 5 years old to 11 years old.

An interesting thing about this League, I believe, is all the children are from many different countries. Right?

  Yes.

  It’s very international.

Soccer or football is one of the world’s most beloved sports. One of these kids today may be the next Ronald.

Oh. Now, let’s watch some of the wonderful goals.

In a soccer match, you’ll score 1 point by kicking the ball into your opponent’s goal. And sometimes, you can use your head. And that’s called a header. Sometimes the goalie or goalkeeper may save the ball, and also save the team. If your opponent made a foul, then you’ll get a free kick. If they made a foul inside the penalty area, then you’ll get a penalty shot, which is the easiest way of scoring.
