希望之星英語風采大賽決賽實況(中學組)

央視國際 2003年07月23日 15:16

Good evening. This is the final of the 4th CCTV Star of Outlook English talent competition. Zhu Hua and Zhao Yingqi are going to host tonight’s contest.

  H: Good evening.

H: Good evening. Thanks for joining us English teenager’s final.

H: Yes. You know, I should say the competition we have today is a great opportunity for me.

H: A great opportunity for you to learn and appreciate.

H: Yes. How do you know it?

H: Because I have the same feeling.

H: Yes. These contestants are really amazing. Today it is another chance to learn more about today’s teenagers. And what is their joy and fun, and what are their growing pains. And we are getting to know in the final of the teenagers’ group. So today we’ll meet another 9 finalists.

Ok. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s give a big hand to the 9 finalists.

H: Good evening. Now you’re watching the 4th CCTV Star of Outlook English talent competition teenagers final.

H: Tonight we have 5 rounds of the competition: caricature, listening, role-play, debate and quick response. And now we will start the very first round ‘caricature’.

  第一輪

H: Now let’s welcome back the 1st contestant, contestant No.1 Zhou Yixue. Welcome back.

H: now we have some numbers on the screen. So please pick up the number.

H: All together we have 10 numbers.

  C1: No.7.

  H: No.7

H: So it is about let’s go to plant trees.

H: They have spoons and forks in their hands.

H: Ok. This is the picture. Now you got 15 seconds to prepare.

C1: ok. Now tree plant, this is tree planting day. And everyone wants to protect environment. But some people seize this chance to have a big dinner. There are 3 men on that picture. Yes, they are going to plant trees, but they have spoons and forks in their hands. So they got this chance to have a big dinner. I think this is really a big problem today. Everyone wants to protect environment, but some people use this chance to have dinner or do something else and use money and waste them. This is really corruptive. So we should change this kind of situation. When we should want to plant trees, we should do it, but not to make excuses, but not to go to have dinner or do something else. So we can see from this picture why there are so many sand and stone. Why there are so little trees. That’s because some of people, they want to have dinner instead of planting trees. So again I want say to all of you, Please protect our environment. Thank you.

H: Thank you. So we can see you really think a lot. Full score of this part is 40 points.

Any of the judges will say something about that? About contestant No.1? Ok, Prof. Hou.

J: all right. I think contestant No.1, it’s No.1? You've done a very good job. I think you describe the picture very precisely. And also you talked about, you know, some people try to spend money on their own interests in the name of good cause. I think you point out the basic gist of this picture. And I think you did a good job. Congratulations.

H: the next contestant No.8 Li Laiyin from Guang Dong.

H: so you ranked No.1 in the semi-final. And you come back. What do you want to say? If you are confident?

C: Well, no matter what the result is, I think everyone who joins this competition is winner. They all taste victory, because being in this competition, whoever is in this competition, is winner. And I think I will try my best and I wish everyone the best of luck.

H: Now let’s take the 1st challenge for you. Please pick up the numbers on the screen. So we have 9 numbers.

  C: I choose No.8.

  H: No.8? It's also the contestant’s number.

  C: Yes.

H: Sympathy. Ok. That’s the picture and you got 15 seconds.

  H: Are you ready?

C: Nowadays on(in) the street of the cities we live, we see many beggars like the one in this picture. They're very poor. They always stretch out their hands asking for our sympathy and pity. They only want a little bit changes, some coins. They only want a full stomach. They only want a little bit food. But we often don’t give sympathy that we should and we just overlook them. Is it correct so? Shouldn’t we give them a little bit? Even the little bird in this caricature is giving the beggar a worm. The bird may not understand that humans don’t eat worms, and that is not very normal, but it is still giving something. It’s giving sympathy and giving what it has. This little bird can be like us. We may not have all the health and wealth, but we do have. We can share with others. Thank you.

  H: Thank you. Well done.

H: so the judges now please score contestant No.8. Who will do the comment this time so? Marijane, please?

J: well, that was really great. That’s amazing that you had your story complete. You add your point of view. You took our point of view. You followed through. Your fluency is so natural, and following like something of my countryman. The logic of your presentation is clear and I feel you made a very good job on how you feel. The pronunciation and intonation, I don’t really have anything to correct that. The only thing I have to say is that everyone has different view on this. That doesn’t matter. Your point of view is well stated, well thought out, well defined and I felt this is sincere and you can convince me. So congratulations. Great job.

H: the next one is Jin Yunan from Beijing. All right, we have 8 numbers. Which one do you choose?

C: I choose No.3. Because it’s my lucky number all the way.

H: Ok, do you see it clearly? Now you have 15 seconds.

C: Well, we can see Bill is playing piano, but he is forced to play by his mom. This is a pretty serious problem which every family has in China. Children are forced to do what they don’t want to do and what they are not interested in. So what I’m talking about is that Bill here wants to play soccer but her (his) mother is using, like, a stick to force him violently. This is serious problem, I think. Parents should, let’s see, respect their children’s ideas. If it’s not a bad idea, they should agree to them. They should let them to do what they want to do, because they want to do it. That means, they have talents to do it. So I think parents should support their kids to do what they want to do, but do not support them if they want to steal something, or like, knock somebody on (in) the street. Thank you very much..

H: Thank you. So please score contestant No.3’s answer. Ok, now let’s listen to one of judges’ comment?

  H: Mr., Prof. Gong, pleases.

J: First, I would like to congratulate for your good answer. I think you showed great understanding of the topic, and you expressed your idea very well. Thank you very much.

  H: Thank you.

H: now we have the 4th contestant onto the stage. That’s contestant No.6 from Hei Long Jiang, contestant Yang Mao. Welcome back. What’s your number?

  C: I will choose No.6.

  H: Always the contestant’s number.

  H: Because that’s unique.

  H: Picture in picture.

Ok, do you get it? Now 15 seconds for you to think about it.

  H: Are you ready?

C: From this picture, we can see a big television. It’s really big. And we can see three members of the family, the father, mother and the child is(are) watching the television. The monitor is in the children’s hand. There are 2 pictures in the television. The bigger one is showing a cartoon film; the smaller one is showing a film for adults. And the two, fathers (father) and mothers (mother), is (are) standing, sitting on two very small chairs and together watching this picture. And I think this picture tells us that in China because most of families have only one child, the father and mother always like their children too much. I think that’s not very good. This will make children not very good. Thank you. That’s all.

H: Ok, so the judges will work on your scores. So Prof. Huang will make some comments?

J: I think you did a good job and you really see irony in this cartoon. In terms of your master of languages, it’s pretty good, with just one or two grammatical mistakes, for example, you refer to the parents, the mother and father is sitting in front of the television. Anyway you did a good job. And I think your answer came to the point. Congratulations.

H: ok the next one is contestant No. 9 Liu Dun from Hu Nan. Welcome back. So this is your school uniform.

  C: yes.

H: why do you have that on?

C: Just because I love my school.

H: Just want to present your school.

  C: Absolutely.

H: So pick a number from the screen.

  C: No.1

  H: No. 1?

H: Burn yourself. Ok, this is the picture, and 15 seconds.

C: Well, different people might take different views about certain caricature. As far as my observation goes, I would say, this one is a perfect blend of satire and humor. Firstly, superficially, I would say, this man, ok, I could say, this man, he thought he was enjoying himself. It’s simple he’s smoking. We definitely know smoke is bad for (to) your health. If you really look hard and look insight, you’ll find smoking is really bad for your health. Just like the title of this caricature, burn yourself, it’s just like some kind of suicide. So from my point of view, this caricature wants to tell us an idea that we should never smoke if we can’t control ourselves. Thank you.

H: Ok the judges, please score for contestant No.9. Liu Dun, do you recognize what is caricature on (in) the picture? You mean, what’s that you called a man?

  C: cigarette.

H: Cigarette? No, I don’t think so. What’s on the floor? What’s on the ground?

  C: Matches?

H: Isn’t that a matchbox? Isn’t that so? Ok, pity that you don’t recognize that? So any comment from the judges, please?

J: I would have to agree with the hosts that, for me, the major point I saw from the picture was the fact that was a matchbox. He’s lighting matches on himself and lighting a cigarette. So sooner or later, he is burning himself as the title. He’s literally, going to burn himself, because if you light a fire, next matches, those matches quickly goes to flame up. And you demonstrate your argument. The consequence of smoking is well presented and you understood it very well. I understood your thought, even without making connection that was a matchbox, you are able to make that cross too. So it’s well done.

H: Now the 6th one. That’s contestant No.10 Yin Jiahui from Jilin. Welcome. Hello! So your number?

  C: I’d like to choose No.10.

  H: No.10.

Ok. This is the caricature. You have 15 seconds to think about it.

C: Ok. This is a very funny caricature. Maybe different people have different minds about it. From my point of view, we can learn that this mother is cooking dinner and she has very, a very special uniform that keeps her away from the smoke of fish. I think it’s funny that it’s just simple smoke, and she’s very thick uniform. So I think sometimes people are so aware of smoke and polluting things. In fact, the smoke from cooking, we know, it is (does) not do much harm to you. We can see a machine in the kitchen. Maybe we’ll make it this outside kitchen, and mother is so aware, so what I want to say is that it is not proper for us to be always so much aware of things that aren't (don’t) do much harm to people. So enjoy your life. Do not be so aware. Thank you.

H: That’s her explanation. So first please mark her explanation about this caricature. And Dian, please?

J: Once again, I have an opportunity to comment on your presentation. You’ve done an excellent job. I’m particularly impressed with your pronunciation and your vocabulary. The word uniform that you used here is quite interesting. It’s good word, A couple of points, Though you mention smoke, what I see in the picture is splashed oil. It is possibly the most dangerous aspect of this , that she might wear armor which is technical name for her uniform.

C: I’m sorry. I just paid attention to smoke.

J: That’s ok, and the machine over the head is a vent. You did an excellent job

H: Ok, the first 6 contestants have completed the 1st round. And we’ll have a look at the scoreboard for their ranks and scores.

H: Ok, welcome back to the CCTV 4th Star of Outlook English talent competition. And now you're watching teenagers' final.

H: We're in the very 1st round caricature. Just now 6 contestants have finished their speeches about the caricatures and the next one the 7th one on the stage will be contestant No.12 Zhang Bo from He Bei.

  C: Hello!

H: Hi! With regard to 4 numbers left, so what's you choice?

  C: I'd like to choose No.2.

  H: No.2.

  H: Signature.

H: Ok. This is the picture, and you got 15 seconds to think about it.

C: From this picture we can see that there are (is) a teacher and a student. The student didn't do well in his exam. He only got 50 points in the exam. And what was worse, his father not only criticized him but also gave him a hand. So there are, we can see, sign on his face. So this is called signature. I don't think it is a good way to educate our children, especially this little children (child). We should… our parents should ask them to follow teachers' instruction and have more confidence in the future. I don't think it's a good way. In the future, our teachers and our parents should pay close attention to this situation and do a better job. Thank you.

H: Thank you, so would you please now score contestant No.12? Ok. Prof, Chen, please have your comment?

J: How are you doing today?

C: Also, the same as I were, I could do better.

J: you look good. Actually you look very confident. I think, very good, precise description of the issue in the picture. And you also pointed out, actually the issue right now with the students. But one thing, I'd like to correct you at this point, is that in English when you say "give somebody a hand", meaning to help, right? That doesn't mean. That's a wrong expression. So I mean although it is a brutal thing to say a slap on the face, but I think, the correct expression should be "slap on the face by the parents". Once again, you did a very good job. I also appreciate your pronunciation, your intonation. You look very natural, and particularly you are also a very polite student. But the way you show the politeness is also quite unique. You didn't bow, but you show very very triumphant sigh every time you're on the stage. And that tells us you are a very confident person. Congratulate on that. Keep doing that. Thank you.

H: the next one is contestant No.11 Cheng Yusi from Si Chuan. So which number will you choose?

H: So there are only 2 left or 3?

  H: 3.

  C: So No.9

  H: No.9.

H: Envy. So this is the picture. To think about it in 15 seconds.

C: First of all, I would say, I think sometimes I mention mature girl(s), because I want to be that. I want to grow up fast. But in this picture, I see that there are two kids looking at two women. And the thing I don't understand is that why the boy turns to look back to women. Maybe these two kids, because they have different sexes. So they are not, They have different reasons to look at women. I think the girl is just like be. I don't admire their shape or step. I just think I want to be a woman like that which is mature, and have my own career. But the boy… this is something I don't understand. Why does he turn back to women? He wonders maybe one day he will have a wife like that. So I think that I don't understand why these two kids turn back. Maybe there are different reasons. That's my point of view. Thank you.

H: And the judges please score for contestant No.11 first. Later we will listen to the judges whether they accept your explanation? Comments?

J: About your content, I think, you should point out that the women have big bags, ok, oh no, the women, they have small bags, but the children have little, oh the children have big bags. So this contrast, this difference is the major point you should point out, because the children probably are wondering why they carry big bags, while not the women, why? Maybe, they're wondering why? And I'm really happy that you are very specific that you pointed out there might be difference between the boy and the girl looking at the women. And it is probably true. I really don't know whether that's the factor. But I think you did observe in a very careful way. And I really congratulate on that I hope you can keep doing that, specific and careful in the observation. Thank you very much.

H: And now we’ll have the last contestant, contestant No.4 Yu Li from Hu Bei on this stage.

H: Welcome back. Hello again. So this time you're the last contestant. Which one?

  C: Stars like most No.5.

H: No.5, ok. No.5 seems to be a good choice.

H: message jam. This is the picture. Please get ready in 15 seconds.

C: well in our really life, we human beings do have congestion, like test congestion, but in this picture we do see a doctor actually want to do something. He is holding a needle. He wants to do some kind of operations on this mobile phone. I think, this reflects one side of today's modern societies. Human being are too much dependent on MIS, SMS, technologies. So we identify ourselves as men who are in need of these mobile phone(s), but we totally ignore or neglect importance of in-persons communications. So with more dependent on these machines, we become more discredit in-persons communications. This picture, I think, satirically points out ubiquitous question among ourselves. We are too dependent on the machines. Thank you.

H: thank you. So please score the last contestant's speech. Contestant No.4.

So Prof. Chen, would you please make some comments?

J: Mobile phone is very useful and important these days, but it's good to hear you don't like to use it. But I hope you will use it in future. I think we do have the message jam, because you know a lot of people are using these mobile phones and you are good in pointing out in your presentation that people are so much dependent on machine rather than person-to-person communication. That's a very good point. But also you know these, I still want to emphasize, these machines are very useful and important. If the problem exists, but we do hope people like you at the young age, you know, devise something to solve this problem in the future to help the people who really need this machine.

C: I will be one of them who make this happen. Thank you.

H: All the 9 contestants have finished their parts in Round 1. Let's take another look at this scoreboard to check out the latest changes.

H: That's the 1st round, and in just a moment we will take the 2nd round. So stay with us

  第二輪

H: Welcome back CCTV the 4th annual Star of Outlook English talent competition teenagers final.

H: We just finished the 1st round, and still got 4 rounds to have. Now we'll have the 2nd round, listening.

H: So now we're in the round listening. After this round, only 6 of you will survive the competition. And sitting besides us is contestant No.1 Zhou Yixue from Ning Xia. Do you feel nervous?

  C: Yes, a little bit.

H: A little bit? Just relax. Take it easy. So we'll show you a little clip. After that, we have three questions.

H: Please select the number first from the screen.

  C: No.3.

  H: No.3 again?

  C: Yes.

  H: Ok, let's go with No.3.

H: Ok, I have 3 questions about this little clip. Please listen carefully. Question 1: what does GPS stand for?

C: Is it not a multichoices question?

  H: No.

  C: Global position signal, position.

  H: That's your answer?

Ok, that's question 1. We will listen to correct answer from our judges in just a moment.

  C: Satellite, maybe.

H: And question 2: how many minutes of music can the second watch record?

  C: 60 minutes.

H: Ok. This is actually a multichoice, but you've already got correct answer. Congratulations. That's exactly 60 minutes.

Listen carefully to question 3: how does the watch record the music?

C: I think, if can record the music from CD or download from computer.

H: So contestant No.1 has finished all of 3 questions. We'll leave it to two of our judges, they are Ms. Marijane and Prof. Hou Yiling, to give the correct answer and also comment on your responses. So now they are having a short discussion about the point you made.

J: For the 1st question, what does GPS stand for, I think, the contestant's answer, global position satellite is acceptable, because that what you heard on the clip. We decide both, GPS stands for Global Positioning System of Satellite. Both are acceptable, because it is not a test whether you know GPS or not, it is about whether you caught that bit on the clip. So we think she should be awarded 5 points, because it would be better if she said Global Positioning System or Satellite. So you got 5 points for the 1st question. And for the 2nd question, you said it could be recorded from CD or computer. I think it's almost correct, 100% except for you should mention through the Internet or via the Internet, downloaded, right, downloaded from the Internet. So you got 5 points for the 3rd question.

H: So all together, the contestant No.1 has got 13 points from these 3 questions. Congratulations.

H: the next one is contestant No.8 Li Laiyin from Guang Dong. And that comes to your turn to choose the number. 9 numbers left on the big screen.

  C: I think I'd like to choose 6.

H: why not No.8 this time?

  C: I think it's because I just want change.

  H: Ok, No.6.

H: The 3 questions are, No.1 is the question that you should give your answer by yourself and the full mark for this question is 6 points. What kind of camera does SATOSHI use to show insect?

C: He uses a digital video camera.

H: Yes, and question 2. This is also a question that you should give an answer. What’s the advantage of the long and thin lens?

C: He can get close to the insect without scaring it.

  H: Q3: with 45-degree angular lens, which of part of the object can we see? This is a multichoice. A: below; B: above; C: both;

  C: C, both.

  H: Yes. That's 3-point question.

For the 1st two questions, let's give it back to our two judges.

J: We're debating with your answer to the 1st question, because you answered correctly, but there was something missing. There's more. So your answer to what kind of camera, it is a digital video camera. That's exactly right. But it has something it's shown through. That's lens. So because you didn't mention the lens, we decided to discredit this one. Ok, your answer is correct, but it is not complete, ok? And for the 2nd one, the advantage, you got it exactly right. The words were right there. The advantage of the long and thin lens is to get close to the insects without scaring them. So your words were exactly from the tape. So we give you 6 for that.

H: So all together, contestant No.8 has got 14. Congratulations.

H: the next contestant No.3 is Jin Yunan from Beijing. All right, are you ready to choose number?

  C: Yes. I'll choose, I see, No.9 for change.

  H: No.9.

Ok, so can you recognize those cartoon figures?

C: Yes, I can. They’re quite populous, but I don't quite remember their names.

  H: Power Pulf Girls.

H: Listen carefully to the following 3 questions. Q1: this is a multichoices question, and 3 points for this question. When did cartoon series start? A: in the 1990s B: in 1919 C: in the 1980s

  C: A.

H: Correct. 3 points, and Q2. This one, you should give the answer by you yourself. 6 points. Why did Power Pulf Girls Cartoon Company bring cartoon series to China?

C: Because potential of Chinese underdevelopment cartoon, let's see, was very big and they did not charge CCTV any much money to have a right to broadcast in China.

H: It's answer to question 2. Let's go on to question 3. What's the expected effect of cartoon series to China's cartoon industry?

C: they're not just going to entertain us but it's going to give Chinese cartoon a boost that we really do need.

H: Ok, so contestant No.3 has finished all of the 3 questions. Now you have won 3 points. What about the other 12 points? Let's listen to two of our judges.

J: congratulations. We think you did a terrific job. For the No.2 question, why did Power Pulf Girls Cartoon Company bring cartoon series to China? You didn't use exact wording from the clip, but the idea is correct. We'd like to award you 6 points for that answer. And for the 3rd question, you again, you didn't use the exact wording, but you also got the meaning exacting. You said, it is to entertain and also bring new concept and to boost China's cartoon industry. The original working is to entertain and to bring new concepts and inspiration to China's cartoon industry, and of course give a boost that was much needed. So this is also 6 points for those answers.

H: So full marks 15 points for contestant No.3. Congratulations.

H: Ok that’s the first 3 contestants' questions and answers. We'll come back with the next 3. So don't go away.

H: Yang Mao, hello, please choose a number from the big screen. Another 7 numbers left.

  C: I will choose No.1.

H: Here we have 3 questions for you. And the 1st question is a multichoices. Please listen carefully. What level of students will not benefit from the new policy? A primary school B: Middle school C: college

  C: I will choose C

H: College. Correct. Three points for question 1. For the second question, what are three target populations of the policy?

C: the one whose family has low incomes, and sorry, I don’t know.

H: You just gave us this one?

  C: yes.

H: Ok, let’s move to the next question. Question 3: why did students from ethnic minority have happy faces?

C: Because they no longer have to face financial burdens.

H: Ok that’s your answer. We’ll leave these 2 questions to our judges.

J: Ok, good job. You have some quick answers. The 2nd one was, just had one answer to 3 points, just have one of 3 parts. Your answer is correct. So we divide 6 points into 3 parts, and give you 3 points. And then the 3rd question, you answered very well. The answer is 9-year compulsory education will not involve financial worries. You got the idea. Your answer is shorter, but we think it’s enough for 6 points.

H: So for these 3 questions, contestant No.6 Yang Mao got 11 points.

H: And the next one who will take challenge is Liu Dun, welcome. What’s your number this time?

  C: No.7.

H: Ok, please get ready to these 3 questions. Q1, please give me the answer. What kind of competition did Sidney launch to improve Australian image?

  C: Building design, architecture competition.

H: So would you please tell us again in a full sentence?

  C: international architecture design competition.

H: Ok, would you like to give us some detail about that, or you just set answer like that?

  C: for music.

H: Ok that’s your answer. Let’s move to the next question. Q2: who’s John Utzon??

  C: He’s a famous architecture designer.

H: Now Q3: when did Australia begin to build the music hall? This is a multichoice.

  A :1973 B:1959 C:1987

  C: A.

H: Your choice is A, 1973. I’m sorry for that. The correct answer should be B, 1959, because in the video, it said after 14 years of construction, the music hall was finally set up, established in 1973. So, 14 years from 1973, that is 1959. And the other 2 questions, I’ll leave job to Marijane and Prof. Hou Yiling.

J: Now for the first question. What kind of competition did Sidney launch to improve Australian image? Your answer, at first, you said international architecture competition. Under the cue of the hostess, you said for the music hall. I’d like to give you 5 points because the 2nd part of the answer was cued, ok? For the 2nd question, you mentioned architecture, but actually the answer to this question has 3 parts. One, the designer of the hall; two, the winner of the competition and the third, architecture. You only mentioned architector, so we only give you 1 point for that, ok? And the 3rd question, you got that wrong. So we’ll leave the hostess to add up your score.

H: thank you, Professor Hou Yiling. So for these 3 questions, contestant No.9 Liu Dun got 6 points. Still congratulations.

H: And I’d like to welcome contestant No.10 Yin Jiahui back on the stage. Ok, let’s look up the screen, 1,2,3,4,5, 5 numbers left. Which one?

  C: I will choose No.10 again.

  H: Ok, please get ready.

H: this little clip is about classic cars in the model of Rolls Royce. Q1, you should give me the answer, ok? What are the general features of Roice-Royce? Please give me at least two points.

C: They are water-dash and something of engine. I just heard this point.

H: That’s your answer? The 2nd question is multiplechoice question. How many kilometers per hour did it run at the top speed?

  C: 2 hundreds… ok, please give me…

H: tell us if you know.

  C: I think it’s 250.

H: Exactly, 250. So 3 points for this question and Q3: what have prospected buyers is known to do? Please give me the answers.

C: They have to pay half of a million dollars.

H: So that’s your answer? I’ll leave No.1 and 3 to our judges.

J: All right. We have your score for the 1st question. What are the general features of Rolls Royce? You need to have 2 answers for that. You had one, was water-dash, so you got 3 points for that; and the other, was either smooth ride or noiseless engine, so for noiseless engine, you got half of that. You’ve got engine. We need to give you 1.5 points actually for that. So you end up 5 points. And the second question, the answer we really want, that is, fly halfway around the world. But your answer is also a good answer. You said what people needed to pay, half of a million dollars, because it’s a very logic answer, even though it is not our answer. We’d like to give you a point. But actually the point is prospected buyers had not bought anything yet.

H: So totally contestant No.10 got 8.5 points.

H: we still got 3 contestants to go, but before that, let’s have a look at the scoreboard for the first 6 contestants’ scores in ranking.

H: welcome back and sitting besides me is contestant No.12 Zhang BO from He Bei. So now it’s up to your turn to select number.

  C: No.2

H: so it seems you’ve written down everything you heard. Now please listen carefully to my 3 questions. Q1, you have to give me the answers by yourself. 6 points for that. What kind of competition is Beijing and I?

C: It’s a special competition specially designed for foreigners in China to show their talents in learning language, learning Chinese,

H: How would they show their talents?

C: they make speeches, just the same as the competition as we have today.

  H: So that’s your answer to Q1?

Q2, a question that has 3 choices. What kind of students is Wei Xiaolan?

A: an American graduate student B: an American undergraduate student C: an American high school student

  C: B

H: An American undergraduate student? Right?

  C: Yes.

H: Scholar for this question. I’m sorry it’s wrong. So A is correct answer. Don’t worry, we have Q3: what’s the Aisin’s reason to join this competition?

C: the reason, one of the reasons, for participation of the competition is that, she wants to be a role model for her students. Use her participation as the propelling force to encourage her students to learn Chinese, no English.

H: Ok, is he correct? Let’s listen to our judges.

J: for the first question, what kind of competition is Beijing and I? You said “it’s a special competition designed for foreigners. You’ve got half of the answer, right? Because, you know, take this competition, for example, but it is actually speaking and writing competition. You didn’t mention either speaking or writing competition. We’ve decided to award you 5 points for this question. And for your last question, you said Aisin wants to be a role model to encourage her students to study English, you got absolutely right answer. So you got 6 points for that answer.

H: So for these 3 questions, contestant No.12 Zhang Bo totally got 10.5. Congratulations.

H: the next one is contestant No.11 Cheng Yusi from Sichuan. Now please select number first. We have 3 numbers left.

  C: 5

  H: Are you ready for 3 questions. Q1 is a multichoice. Why doesn’t Dashan have a lot of personal friends? A: He’s not an extraward. B: He’s too extraward. C: He’s a cross-talker performer.

C: So can I ask about what the word means and or you can explain the meaning?

  H: No.

C: Because I don’t understand why he doesn’t have many friends, because he is quite personal and he is kind of personal. It depends on his personality.

H: So according to what you heard?

C: Can you repeat the question again, so I can have a guess?

H: So which is your choice? I have to be very tough, because I need to be fair. I will tell you later. Now you need to tell me which one is your choice?

  C: B.

  H: You guessed it?

  C: Yes, you’re right.

H: I’m terrible sorry. This is the wrong answer, so the correct answer should be A. He’s not extraward. Ok now, let’s continue to the 2nd question. Why did Dashan make educational program lately? And 6 points for that.

C: First of all, because Dashan is quite famous all around China. He has already made other programs and lately he is doing this kind of the program, because he thinks he has responsibility, maybe from his point of view, like in the video, we’ll need something very nice, if you’re happy, when you meet something very sad, you think you have responsibility, this is something he can show to people. Purpose of his educational program, maybe, it is to give some advises or something like that.

H: Ok the last one, How does Dashan describe how he belongs here? And 6 points for that?

C: Because he had been living in China for many years and a lot of people know him. He thinks he is part of environment. He belongs here, for the people here and people love him, I think, he belongs here, because maybe he did a lot of things, he likes us, I think he’s part of environment.

H: Ok, let’s leave it to the judges for judgment.

J: for the 1st one, I’d like to add one thing about that. In English, when people use a big word, for you, you should listen very carefully directly after sometimes he gives you the explanation right after. He did that. He said “ he is intraward” that means, he is not a very extraward person. I’m a very personal person. So you caught it, but you did not look for the answer. So next time you will know right after big word, is probable the explanation. It’s often the case. Anyway that’s another subject. Ok the second one, why did Dashan make educational program lately? You had a lot of good answers, but the answer we’re looking for wasn’t among them. So we want to give you credit on what you did answer. You answered many things, “ he’s been here for a long time. When something is good and he is happy, he wants to take some responsibility. He wants to be more serious, all these things, he is popular, people love him. All this is true, but the answer we’re looking for is he said” he is still seen as a comedian and he wants to be seen something more than that comedian part. We want to give credit for the information you did give, you have credit for that question 3 points, ok?

And the last one is what you’ve talked about in the 2nd question. How does Dashan describe how he belongs here? The way you answered question, there is good. He feels happy and something like. He feels related to Chinese culture and history. You did mention some good points so we’re going to give you 2 points for the points you did mention. So again we’re going to give you credit on all you have given for the 2nd and 3rd questions, even though they’re not actually related to the answer we want. So all together you get 5 points.

H: so for all these 3 questions, totally contestant No.11 has got 5.

H: the last one is contestant No.4 Yu Li. Welcome back. Good luck. So we have only 2 numbers left. 4 or 8?

  C: I’d like to choose No.8.

H: listening carefully to the question. Q1, also you should give answer to that one. 6 points. Why is teamwork necessary?

C: because they have different academic level and different cultural background. You have to have teamwork to make this plan to go.

H: Ok, Q2, and we have 3 choices for that? What does the teacher emphasize more?

A: the process B: the final product C: both

C: He just said “ I should put more emphasis on the process.” I’ll choose A, the process.

H: A is correct. 3 points. And question 3: what’s the great gift the teachers can give to students?

C: the great gift is not about what’s told, what they tell, what they have known to the students, but to give them a kind of method to find more than the teacher knows.

H: so let’s now listen to the judges.

J: for your answer to the 1st question, you said because teachers and students come from different cultures, so they need a teamwork spirit to make things to go. You did say, you did mention the plan, that’s the answer we’re looking for, because it’s necessary to reason why teamwork spirit is necessary, it is because they need to make the plan of teaching activities and goals. So you probably confuse go with goals. But basically your idea is correct, so we’d like to award you 4.5 points for the answer, ok? For the last question, what’s the great gift the teachers can give to students? Your answer is absolutely correct, so 6 points for that.

H: so 4.5 points for the 1st question, 3 points for the 2nd question and 6 for the 3rd one, all together, 13.5 points. Congratulations.

  第三輪

H: Good evening. Welcome back to the CCTV 4th Star of Outlook English talent competition. And now you're watching teenagers' final.

H: We just finished the 2nd round, listening, that is an elimination game. So after that round, only 6 of 9 contestants will stay with us for the 3rd round. Before we check the scoreboard, let's welcome all contestants back on the stage.

H: welcome back. So now we will see the scoreboard again and will check out who will be eliminated. We’ll divide you into 3 groups. The first group are contestant No.1,8,3, contestant No.1, do you know your rank now?

  C: I don't know.

  H: So any prediction?

  C: Maybe the 4th or 5.

H: So you think you will survive. I don't have to put this question to contestant No.8. She's really taking the lead. Let's take a look at the scoreboard for their ranks from No.1,8, and 3.So who will survive the competition?

  H: 1,8,3, all of them.

  H: congratulations. The 2nd group, contestant No.6,9,10.

H: And here is the result of contestant No.6.

H: congratulations. So now we have 4. And that means in the last 3, No .12,11, and 4. Only two of you will stay with us. So now let's check out. And the two contestants are contestant No.12 and 4. Congratulations. So six of you will stay with us for the next round.

H: we also want to express our thanks to the other 3 contestants who have to leave us.

H: they are contestants No.9,10,11. Thank you very much.

Ok, now, let's kick off the 3rd round, role-play.

In this part, we will divide all the 6 contestants into 3 parts and for each part we have the same situation.

H: For the 1st group, the contestants will be contestant No.1 Zhou Yixue and contestant No.8 Li Laiying. Let's welcome 2 girls back onto the stage.

H: So we have the same situation for both of you. To finish this part, we've invited 2 of the judges onto the stage, Mr.Tom Wooldridge and Ms. Marijane Elliott. And for your part, Mr. Tom Wooldridge will help you to finish it. Before raising questions to you, contestant No.8, you will have to leave us for the moment. The situation for you is, you have 30 seconds to get prepared and then 2 minutes to finish your acting. You are a representative of a student environmental protection organization. You have to persuade a boss to give you some financial support for your research in the Antarctic. So you have 30-second discussion with Tom.

  C: Ding-Dong,

  T: Come in.

C: Good morning, Mr. Tom. I am a student from Peking University. We're organizing… It's very nice to meet you.

T: Nice to meet you too.

C: we're organizing a polar beer (bear) protecting program. So we want to protect polar beers (bears), but we're short of money, so would you please…?

T: I'm sorry. What's the polar beer, I mean, I like to drink beer. It's good, but polar beer, I don't understand.

C: it's not the beer you drink. It's huge animal. It's very acute. You know, it's every dangerous. So many people want to kill them. They want their fur. So if we did not protect, maybe, they will die out. Maybe our offspring will not know what polar beer (bears) is (are). We're lack of money. We're students, but we do want to do something to protect our beautiful earth, to protect our environment.

T: I understand that, but aren’t you afraid going over that the bear might eat you, you know, you are gonna over and they don’t want to protect you. They rock you and they kill you.

C: that's just the point. We need something to protect ourselves and also we need something to protect ourselves from being hurt by the beer (bear). So we need a lot of money. But you know what we're doing is really meaningful. It is quite significant.

T: Now, it sounds good. But first I will ask how much money are you looking for?

C: I’m looking for one million dollars.

  T: how much?

  C: one million dollars.

  T: what?

C: You think it's too much? Ok, maybe we can think it about later. So what about 5 thousand dollars?

  T: 5 thousand dollars.

C: That's not the harm to you, but it really means a lot to us. So please

T: you have good argument. Ok, take that.

  C: thank you.

H: Ok, the 2nd one of this pair if contestant No.8 Li Laiying. Welcome back. So are you ready? Do you know what we have on the desk and chairs here?

  C: No, not really.

H: not really? So find it out. You are a representative of a student environmental protection organization. You have to persuade a boss, and that's Tom, to give you some financial support for your research in Antarctic. And you have 30 seconds to have discussion with Tom and them you’ll have to use two minutes’ time limit to finish your performance, ok?

  T: come in.

C: Excuse me, sir, but could you put your stuff down and listen to what I have to say to you? Did you see this banner? Environmental protection, right? Do you see? And on Antarctic, you know what are the two things that are really very important and known to everyone.

  T: oh, you tell me.

C: oh, my god. Of course, penguins and ice.

  T: those penguins on Antarctic?

C:Yes. Did you ever taken those lessons

T: No, just went straight to the boss position.

C: I guess that's why. Anyway I don't know if you like penguins, do you?

  T: I’ve never seen a penguin.

C: Ok, a penguin looks like when you get just top of torpedo.

  T: Sounds great.

C: So do you want to protect them?

T: Well, I guess, what you say are two things. Penguins, what the other thing you want to protect?

C: Ice. Like the stuff you put in your Coca-Cola when it is too hot.

T: I can ice at home. Why would I want to protect ice?

C: well, what happen if you don't have water for your ice? Or if water is contaminated and polluted, when you want fresh ice on the Antarctic.

T: I guess I would. Yes. I would, in fact, yet.

So how much money do you want from here?

C: money, well, those things, that might be a little high, but now let's sign a contract. Would you like to protect them?

T: I am not signing any contract until I know what I’m getting into.

C: well, you get to save those little acute animals full of blubber in stomach.

I guess everybody here will like you, right everybody?

T: but I’m worry about money. How much money do you want?

C: Not more than what you buy and use for a car.

  T: What kind of car?

  C: Maybe a Ford, a jeep.

T: Sounds good. Well, you gotta yourself money.

  C: thanks.

H: Ok, please now score for these two contestants. First, score contestant No.1. The full score is ten points. Now would you please score contestant No.8?

So Dian, would you please make some comments on their performances?

J: Overall, for the two, two of you, the intensity for the No.1 and the forcedness for the No.8 are outstanding. Plus both of you demonstrated great listening comprehension. You understood everything Tom said and the questions he posed to you. You comprehend it.

  H: Thank you.

H: and next we’ll invite the second group contestant No.3 Jin Yunan and contestant No.6 Yang Mao onto the stage. First, I’d like to tell you that in this part Marijane will help to finish it. and will start with contestant No.3. So contestant No.6, will see you in a moment, ok?

H: See, we gotta a table and two chairs. Again I would like you to have a guess what situation we have for you?

C3: My guess is (that) it is a secret agent meeting with his boss.

  H: No way.

H: Let’s see what situation you got here. You have foreign friend who wants to learn Chinese here. And she finds Chinese is too hard for her and want to give it up. You try to persuade her to continue.

H: That’s Marijane. Welcome back, Marijane. So now you can have a 30-second discussion with Marijane. After that you will have to finish your performance within 2 minutes, ok?

  H: Are you ready?

  H: You can start now.

C3: So how are you going?

  M: Ma-ma, Ma-ma. I just want to quit.

  C3: are you sure?

M: Yes, I can’t do it. It’s too hard for me.

C3: But you came so far.

M: No. I really can’t do it. You know Chinese is just too hard for me. I quit.

C3: But what are the main points? It is really easy. Just like English.

M: it’s really? No, it is unlike English.

C3: But once you know the Han Yu Ping Yin, it is really easy.

M: Well, when I start to speak Chinese, you know, my Chinese teacher is not very nice. If it’s wrong, she says “Bu Dui”. If it’s right, she says “That’s Ok, but Dashan does better”

C: What a strict teacher. I strongly condemn her. But I still think you should keep on going.

M: Why? Please give me some reason.

C3: first, you’re working in China, right? China has entered the WTO. More foreigners will come. And then you will have to meet more Chinese. When you meet more Chinese, you need say fluent Chinese.

M: Can’t they just learning English?

C: But right now English is not the only in the international languages. Chinese will be international language too. So one day China will dominate the world. And everybody will have to learn to speak Chinese. Then you have to speak Chinese. Isn’t it a little bit better to have an early start?

M: Ni Shuo De Dui. I will do it.

C3: Thank you. All right. I’m sure one day you can speak fluent Chinese, I’m very sure.

  M: I appreciate your encouragement. Ok, Ma-ma, Ma-ma, yes.

H: Now let’s welcome contestant No.6 Yang Mao.

Hi, Yang Mao, you see that Marijane is sitting here. And you will have discussion with her. So listen carefully to the situation you will have this time. Ok listen to me. You have a foreign friend who wants to learn Chinese here. That is Marijane. She wants to learn Chinese but finds it is too difficult to learn and wants to give it up. You should try to persuade her to continue. You got 30 minutes to discuss with Marijane and after that you gotta 2 minutes to finish.

  C6: Hi, Marijane.

  M: Hi.

C6: How are your these days?

M: Oh, I’m just so discouraged. You know I’m learning Chinese, but I’m just not making progress. I just want to quit.

C6: I think Chinese is really difficult to study, but you can have some ways to study. I think I will help you, so don’t have to give up it (give it up).

M: My first problem is tone. I can’t remember what tone goes where. It’s so hard for me.

C6: I think for example, when I learn English, the tones are always very difficult, because Chinese tones are very different from English tones. I think you can just practice more. I think that’s better for you to communicate more with the natives, because, you know, you are living in China. There are many people (who) live here, most of people speak Chinese. So you can talk to them and learn from them.

M: Why can’t I just do everything in English? Lots of people speak English here. I can just talk to them. How about that?

  C: I beg your pardon.

M: Lots of people speaking English here in China. Why don’t I just to talk to them? Then I won’t have to bother.

C: But you know first you want to learn Chinese, right?

M: Yes, I did. But it’s too hard.

C: then because not every Chinese can speak English. Some of them couldn’t speak English. But when you have trouble and there isn’t anyone who can speak English around you, then you will be without help.

M: that’s true. So what should you say about my trouble?

C6: Maybe you can ask help from your friends, me, and I think I will help you.

  M: Really?

  C6: Yes.

M: Can I call you anytime?

  C6: Yes.

M: Do you have Shou Ji?

C6: Yes. Of course I have one. You can call me at any time.

  M: You really help me?

  C6: Yes. Trust me.

M: Ok, I will keep going. All right.

  H: Please score contestant No.3.

And next please score contestant No.6’s performance. Any comments, please?

  H: Professor Huang, please?

H: First of all, both of you did good jobs, because both of you have succeeded in convincing and persuading Ms. Marijane to keep up with her Chinese. But individually, I think contestant No.3 like a really actor. Your performance is very dramatic. In terms of contestant No.6, your reasons are also very practical in learning Chinese. As we all know, many foreigners are now learning Chinese and the problem is not why they should learn Chinese but how to get best result in a short time. So practice is also very important. I think you’re very practical and try to be dramatic next time.

  H: thank you.

H: Ok, the next two actors, I should say, are contestant No.12 and No.4. So welcome back, Zhang Bo and Yu Li.

  H: welcome back.

  H: What does that mean?

  C: Cooperate.

H: No. You don’t have to cooperate. You have to cooperate with one of the judges.

C: we’re in the same boat. Yes. Of course, to wish the other one good luck.

C: Chinese think predestination. We're predestined to be so. So wish the other one good luck.

H: Of course. Ok, we have the same situation for both of you. So No.4 Yu Li, you have to leave us for a while. Ok now Zhang Bo listen carefully to your situation. You’re a volunteer in a nursing home. You try to make an old, grunting man happy. The old man is Tom.

H: Have you found where he is?

  H: Welcome back, Tom.

  H: Please help him

H: So now, Zhang Bo, you have 30 seconds to have a short discussion with Tom and 2 minutes to finish your performance, all right? Ok, let’s start.

  C12: what’s wrong with you?

  T: what?

  C: what’s ailing you anyway?

  T: I don’t understand.

C: I mean what’s the matter with you? You seem not very good.

  T: Yes. A little down.

C: Oh, I would see, what’s ailing you, anyway?

T: what’s ailing me? Look at my teeth, my hair, both are, everything is falling apart. My foot doesn’t work. You’ll be sad too.

C12: Now, listen, you have your advantage, because you are experienced. You are a skilled man. You are still young, not old. And my opinion is…

  T: Not old?

  C12: You’re a young man.

T: Look at me. I’m 126 years old.

C12: remember, you’re one of the best players when you are (were) young. You have won the first price.

T: That’s true. That’s. And the crowd was cheering.

C12: So now, you’re healthy as well. So trust yourself. Just have enthusiasm to conquer everything.

T: you think enthusiasm can make me young again?

C12: Yes. You still not old, I guess so.

T: so what should I do?

C12: doing some, now you’re living in china, huh? Do some Taiji, get up early every morning believing it’s a nice day everyday.

T: Ok, I will try that.

  C12: Thank you。That will work.

  H: Now it’s contestant No.4 Yu li’s turn. Let’s welcome him back.

Just sit down now, and do you know what your situation is?

  C4: I don’t have idea.

H: If you don’t have idea. Do you see where Tom is?

  C4: that’s a very nice hairdo.

H: Yes, it’s a very nice hairdo. Listen very carefully to your situation. You’re a volunteer in a nursing home. You try to make an old, grunting man feel happy again, all right? Now you can start to get prepared, and you have 30 seconds and then you have 2 minutes to finish.

C4: Gentlemen please sit down. Actually it might be appropriate for me to make self-introduction. I’m a volunteer in a nursing company.

  T: Ah?

C: I’m a volunteer for a nursing company. You have very bad these days. And I’m here to make you happy. So could you just please tell me what’s your problem with? You have the problems with you and make you so sad and depressed.

T: You think you can get me happy?

C4: Ya. You know there’s an old saying (that) goes like that. Every cloud have (has) a silver lining. I’m the very person to help those most, the, the people in total despair to see your silver lining in what seems like black thunderstorm.

  T: what’s that silver lining?

C4: You know life is beautiful. So why is (are) you always complaining about it?

T: Oh, well, for example, see my teeth?

  C4: Ya.

  T: so actually I don’t have…

C: you know you don’t have teeth to be happy. I don’t have either. And you know that happy… I’m younger than you. You know if you’re happy, that, that, you know our misery like a company? If I were accompanying you, you will feel very happy. You know I’m not a very professional guy.

  T: I can see that.

C: I want to do in a more professional way to make you happy. You know, I know the old people likes play police stations too. That’s a kind of video game. So I’ve got some here. You know old people have to open their mind to the outside world to see how the exciting the world is, because when you were young, you were deprived of the privilege of playing video games. I’ve brought some video games. It is with them, video games, you can taste (taste) how those young guys, are so happy but you’re so depressed.

T: Oh, video games equals happiness and my presents. Ok, take me to play some video games. Ok, thank you.

C4: Ok, let’s get that. Thank you very much, Tom.

H: Next, please score contestant No.4, Yu Li. Dian, would you like to make some comment?

D: distinctively different performances, so I speak to you individually. Contestant No. 12, I agree to your wit. I love the concept the old man can be best younger, the best young in competition. You showed great deal of encouragement and incentive and enthusiasm. I feel that is needed for the character. Contestant No.4, good introduction. I think it is important volunteers to explain who they are. Very original and also your communication is extremely believable. Overall, an excellent job. Thank you.

  H: Thank you.

  第四輪

H: welcome back. Now you’re watching the 4th CCTV Star of Outlook English talent competition teenagers final.

H: To begin with this part, let’s check the scoreboard for changes.

Now let’s welcome the 6 contestant back on the stage.

H: Ok, now, let’s kick off the fourth round. Debate. So in this round, we will give a topic to the 6 contestants to have a debate on that. But before that, we have to divide them into two sides. They will be decided by selecting a number from, actually a picture from the big screen. So contestant No.1. Please turn around and see… yes, we have 6 very lovely cartoon figures and which is your favorite.

  C1: Rabbit.

H: Rabbit. Ok. What about contestant No.8?

  C8: Panda.

H: Rabbit, that’s the pro side. What about panda? Let’s turn over the picture.

H: So contestant No.8 has chosen the panda. You’re on the con side.

  H: And then contestant No.3.

H: It’s your turn. Panda and rabbit have been chosen.

  C3: I will choose B.

H: Contestant No.3 chose B. What does B stand for?

  H: con side.

  H: What about No.6?

  C6: I will choose shark.

H: Contestant No.6 will choose shark. What is shark…

. I think it is a dull thing. So contestant No.6 is on the pro side. And No.12?

  C12: sheep or hawk.? Hawk.

H: Is that hawk? Just a swell, big bird. That’s your choice. So you’re on the pro side. And Yu Li.

H: Yu Li will be on the con side.

  C4: I face no choice.

  H: yes, no choice.

H: so how many pros do we have?

  H: 3. No. 1, 6 and 12.

H: so you must be on the con side.

Ok, now contestant No. 4, 3 and 8 are on the con side.

H: Contestant No.1, 6 and 12 will be on the pro side.

H: all right. So what do we have for today’s debate? Let’s listen carefully.

H: The topic is do you think All English Classes in High Schools should be taught by Foreigner Teachers? So the pro side should say yes. That is, all English classes in high schools should be taught by foreign teachers. The con side should say: “no, it is unnecessary, right?

H: We’ll start with the pro side. Let’s listen to their opinion. Let’s start.

C6: we think foreign teachers should teach all English classes in China. The first reason is that what we study English for. We study English for to get (getting) more information from outside world. So if foreign teachers teach us, they will bring (to) us from the outside world. Secondly, foreign teachers’ intonations are very native. So we will have good intonation.

H: Now it’s your turn Jin Yunan.

C3: My point is that when you are in high school, your No. 1 priority is to enter a good college. When you have passed college entrance examination. But right now China’s English examination still has a little bit of chinglish inside. If every teacher in high school is foreign teacher, that will be pure English. There won’t be any chinglish. We won't benefit from it.

H: Ok, let’s just go on with the 2nd speaker. Let’s listen to contestant No.8, it is for you to attack the pro side’s opinion.

C8: I think it is not (I don’t think) necessary to have foreign teachers. Because, first of all, when you do have foreign teachers, although you get different ideas about their culture outside the world, we are also not in contact, because the culture between the teacher and students is not the same one. There will be difference. There will be gap between them. The communication won’t be as easily connected.

  H: let’s listen to contestant

  H: No.12, Zhang Bo.

C12: We definitely think that all of teachers should be foreigners. Now we are in the process of learning English. No.1, as our first contestant said they have better pronunciation and intonation. They have the foundation to teach language(s) well. And secondly, I think they have right background of their countries. So I think all of the teachers should be foreigners.

H: Now we will give you 5 minutes for free discussion, ok? Start.

C: I don’t agree with contestant No.3, because I think the purpose we learn English is to communicate with the outside world, but not only to do enough tests. So what’s the use of the students and a person who can only do test but can not communicate with the outside world. The foreign teachers could teach students a better intonation, and could teach the class more lightly. That will make students more like to learn English. We’ll have a lot of fun. But the Chinese teachers will focus more on doing exercise and grammar, I think, that will ruin students, because they will think English is just a tool to get a high mark and not to communicate with the people. And that’s our opinion that the all the English classes in schools should be taught by foreign teachers, because they can open their eyes to the outside world.

C: Thank you, but please don't misinterpreting contestant No.3’s statement, because he has just mentioned our top priority is college entrance examinations, but it is not total exclusional of some other activities. So this is the 1st one I want to say here. And the other one is, I want to say here, a foreign teacher may be a very, proper alternative opportunity for domestic, native teachers, but could we afford the high price that foreign teachers' demand?

C: I totally disagree with contestant No.4, because I mean foreign teachers, their style of teaching English are so good, and I think, the situation would be the best.

C: But how did you know that the students here study better a new style? Some students may like it, but the other students may not be used to it. How would you get them to adapt to it? We still need some English, some foreign teachers and some Chinese teachers.

C: the native teachers have better concrete, a better sympathy between us, they can make the knowledge seem clean, much easier.

C: most of parents now want to sent their children abroad to study English. Why? Because they want to create a better environment. But now we can invite foreign teachers to our school to teach the students English. And that will be much cheaper.

C: As I have mention(ed), the top priority for high school students is to past the college entrance examination. So going abroad and learn pure English, they can do it later. The top priority is still to pass that test. So in this situation, we do need teachers that is (are) focusing on test.

C: I don’t agree with you that to past the entrance exam is the first task of student. But it is not a task for our men. As a man, you shouldn’t always think about the entrance exam. You have many things to think about. And if you just learn English for the entrance exam, you’re just a student but not human

C: but many students do that. But don’t you think that they need support both on the examination and the questions on the exam and also on their partner, their own their feeling, because there are Chinese teacher, then they can communicate with them. And they can encourage them and make them feel better preparing for that test.

C: the correct foundation of getting a high mark is the correct pronunciation. It is reported that good pronunciation is the only thing that makes you toward success.

C: But the problem is that when you are taking the college examination test, there is no speech test or something like that. Everything is just determined on, if you get a high score on a piece of paper, there is nothing like speech contest like what you were talking right now.

C: I will ask No.3 do you think whether or not to enter a good college is the good way, is the only way to have a good future? Do you think so?

C: I have said it is the top priority.

C: we think that foreign teachers can also help students to get a high mark in the college entrance examination, because they will have them to know more about the culture and the more about the real skill of English.

C: Yes, foreign teacher is a very nice alternative. But for our high school students, our native teachers know much about the format, and mechanism how college examination works. So she or he knows better, but if you have foreign teachers here, she is firstly formal. She must get in touch with, get familiar with this system.

C: Yes, they could have us passing the entrance. But what after we pass the entrance examination, they won’t help us too much.

C: The most important thing, .

  第五輪

H: I’m sorry I have to stop you here. Time is up for free discussion and free debate, and now let’s move to our conclusion. This time we’ll start with

  H: contestant No.1 Zhou Yixue.

C: Our opinion is that all of the English class in Middle schools should be taught by foreign teachers. And we have 3 to support our idea. The first one is that the foreign teachers can teach students a better intonation and pronunciation. The second one is that the foreign teachers will create a free atmosphere for students to learn. The third one is that the foreign students will help students to get a high mark in the examination. Please vote us, thank you.

H: Ok they will vote for winning side later. And now let’s firstly listen to contestant No.4 for your conclusion and please note that you have only 30 seconds. Start.

C: My suggestion for the pro side is that don’t go to extreme because we’re talking about, you’re talking about all the teachers should be replaced by foreign teachers. As No.3 and No.8 just said, we have the native teachers to help us to grow well all roundly. So our grammar, our intonations and our pronunciations and those kind of things. Well, all this must be tended. So if foreign teachers can do all these job? So I question it.

H: Ok, thank you very much. So that’s the end of the debate.
