演講題目:CCTV and I: Growth and Hopes

On the evening of June 8th, I was asked to report on how people felt before the Olympic torch relay started. I did interviews together with my cameraman across Beijing until midnight. After sleeping on the office floor for less than three hours, we went out again to the Tian’anmen Square to report on scene the starting ceremony of the first Olympic torch relay in China. Going home at 9 o’clock the next morning, I felt very proud that I had survived the challenge and made pretty good reports. I told myself that I would continue to work hard to make good reports in 2008, when the Olympic games are held in China for the first time.

Ms. Ouyang Xiadan, the anchor of my department’s morning program, always appears fresh and energetic to her audience. Her unique style of presenting and loveliness has won high praises from viewers across the country. But few people know the hardship and pain she has to endure every day when she has to wake up at 4 o’clock in the morning!

Ouyang Xiadan is only one representative of my hard-working colleagues who set an example for me. During the ten months working in the Economic News Studio of CCTV, I have been working hard, learning and growing everyday together with my colleague, my editors and the whole CCTV community.

I was very excited and nervous the first time I held the microphone bearing the logo of CCTV to my first interviewee. I asked the expert many irrelevant questions, and had to take three hours back at home to edit our conversation. However, with the guidance of my team leader Ms. Rosary Song, I gradually learned the skills of interviewing. Several months later, after I finished interviewing the Foreign Minister of Austria, she said to me a phrase that I still remember, “you are very professional! ”.

Besides interview skills, I made progress in other aspects as well. Through the three hundred days working in CCTV, I have grown from an inexperienced graduate into an independent reporter, a person who knows how to work professionally, how to communicate with people effectively, and how to deal with difficulties courageously.

My progress is only a small part of the big picture of the changes happening on CCTV. CCTV started three new channels and dozens of new programs last year. Every department of the station has undertaken reforms.

But we are facing challenges even with ongoing development. There are many times that I felt depressed when I read business news inside China by foreign media, like the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, because their reporting are more timely and insightful than ours.

CCTV is not just cameras, microphones and other machines; CCTV is a group of dedicated people working together as a team. Each of us is a representative of CCTV, and what we do will determine what CCTV will be. My dear colleagues, by each of us improving ourselves we are contributing to improving CCTV bit by bit. Let’s work together to make our CCTV and ourselves better!
