China calls for more APEC cooperation on anti-terrorism
   FRI, OCT 25, 2002

The Chinese foreign minister has called on the international community to strengthen cooperation in fighting all forms of terrorism. Tang Jiaxuan made the appeal on Wednesday at a ministerial meeting held in the Mexican seaside resort of Los Cabos as a "prelude" to the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum scheduled in October.

Tang Jiaxuan said as a major economic cooperation forum in the Asia-Pacific region, APEC should take further steps to deepen anti-terror cooperation.

This includes strengthening customs inspection against terrorism, cutting off funding sources for terrorists and ensuring the safety of telecommunications on the basis of the anti-terror statement issued by APEC leaders in the 2001 APEC leaders meeting held in Shanghai, the minister said.

Tang recalled the deadly terrorist bombing on the island of Bali in Indonesia on October 12 that killed some 200 people, and a series of recent terrorist attacks in the Philippines.

He said these terrorist attacks mean terrorism is still directly threatening peace in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Chinese foreign minister said China, which has been deeply victimized by terrorism, resolutely condemns and opposes all forms of terrorism, supports and implements relevant UN Security Council resolutions and participates actively in all the anti-terror cooperation of APEC.

While meeting with Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda, Tang thanked Mexico for its efforts to host the APEC meeting, and said China supports this year's theme put forward by Mexico on extending cooperative benefits and realizing economic growth.

Tang Jiaxuan also exchanged views on anti-terror with Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda.
