   WED, OCT 23, 2002

Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in Chicago on Tuesday morning, kicking off his four-day working visit to the United States as guest of US President George W. Bush.

The climax of the Chinese president's trip will be a meeting with Bush at the US president's Taxas ranch. It is President Jiang's second visit to the United States. He first visited the country in October 1997.

The windy city of Chicago turned on the style for the Chinese president's arrival. Chicago Mayor Richard Michael Daley, Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois Matthew Bettenhausen and hundreds of people warmly greeted President Jiang Zemin and his wife Wang Yeping at the airport.

Even the Chicago weather welcomed the guest from far away, greeting him with a gentle autumn breeze and bright sunshine.

In a written statement upon his arrival, President Jiang Zemin said that, during his visit, he will meet US President Bush and hold an in-depth exchange of views with him on bilateral relations and other issues of common interest. The Chinese president said he was convinced his visit will deepen mutual understanding and trust, and expand the scope of exchanges and cooperation between China and the US.

President Jiang said he was "very pleased" to come to Chicago to start his US visit. Terming Chicago as an important financial, trade and industrial center in the US, he said the Chinese government attached importance to developing close cooperation with Chicago and encouraged all regions and departments within China to carry out exchanges with the city in all fields.

Following his working visit, the Chinese president will continue on to Mexico this weekend to attend the 10th APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Los Cabos.
