Hong Kong Science Park opens
   SAT, JUN 29, 2002

A grand park combining scientific research and development opened for business Thursday afternoon in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The park is to be developed in three phases, with completion scheduled for 2008. A number of tenant companies have begun operations in the phase one.

Upon completion at the end of 2008, the Science Park will provide a total gross floor area of 330,000 square meters. One of the main objectives of establishing the Park is to provide a campus-like environment where technology companies, talents, resources and quality facilities converge to germinate innovative ideas and spur breakthroughs in new technologies.

When first conceived in 1997 with the approval by Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, the Park was to focus on four technology clusters including information technology and telecommunications, electronics, biotechnology, and precision engineering.

Officials from the Park believe that its opening will enhance the Hong Kong SAR's role as a hub of innovation and technology development in Asia. So far, 16 companies have signed tenancy agreements with the Park, bringing Phase One's occupancy rate to 55 percent.
