China's Accession to WTO Formally Approved
SAT, NOV 10, 2001
With the gavel stricken, China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) has become a reality Saturday at the fourth session of the WTO ministerial meeting opened Friday in Doha, Qatar.

China's entry was formally approved by trade ministers of the 142 WTO

members. Now China is a member of the WTO, bringing the world's fifth largest trading power -- after the United States, the European Union, Japan and Canada -- into the world's most important trade body.

Just like Long Yongtu, chief negotiator from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, has said: "Our goal to enter into the WTO has finally been realized. This means a beginning of an important process, not an end of it. China will have a new beginning from now on."

"The end of the negotiation on WTO accession does not mean the end of China's reform and opening up process, but rather China's reform and opening up program has stepped into a new process," he said.

China and the WTO are due to sign a membership accord Sunday.
