The fourth WTO ministerial meeting is about to open in a couple of hours in Doha, Qatar. Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, one of the top concerns with the meeting is security, and Singapore was once even considered as a safer venue.
As the opening of the WTO meeintg approaches, security is getting tighter and tighter around the conference venue, the Sheraton Hotel. Working is two shifts, police keep 24 hour vigils around the major points in the city. However, they're not all in uniform. This officier said that many are dressed in traditional robes so as not to frighten people.
Having started to prepare for the meeting nine months ago, local police have doubled their equipment, from x-ray scanners to wake-talkies to metal detectors. They have also conducted special personnel training. A senior officer said that security is more than one hundred percent.
These two officers are checking for suspicious items under tables and chairs with mirrors. Sniffer dogs are also used during searches. Regular checks are being made for explosives in the conference site, and even some hotel rooms around the city.
None of the security guards would talk on camera and many refused to be filmed.
The checks are even further tightened up at night.
