WED, DEC 12, 2001
The cleaning up of laws, regulations and policies contradictory to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) shall be a priority for China as it joined the trade body Tuesday, State Councilor Wu Yi said.

She made the remark while addressing 180 officials in charge of legislative affairs from across the country in Beijing Tuesday.

The state councilor urged governments at all levels to fully understand the impact of WTO membership on the way government affairs are run.

She underlined the importance for governments to refrain from interfering in economic affairs that should be left to market forces, and focus their work on macro control and the creation of a sound and healthy market order.

She also urged them to abide by the principles of the rule of law and transparency in decision-making, administration and law enforcement.

The state councilor called on local governments to study the WTO rules, and allocate all necessary resources for the revision and abolition of laws and regulations which run counter to WTO rules.
