A European Union source said on Monday that WTO trade negotiators in Doha have agreed in principle on drug patents.
The agreement is to reconcile protection for rich countries' drug patents with developing countries' demands for medicines to tackle epidemics such as AIDs. The deal, thrashed out by negotiators, still need to be endorsed by the full WTO membership.
Diplomats said they hoped a breakthrough on patent protection would help unlock a broader deal before the WTO conference ends on Tuesday.
