World Trade Organization and UN heads are backing the call for new multilateral trade liberalization talks.
WTO Director General Mike Moore says growth in world trade is expected to fall to 1 or 2 percent at best in 2001, one of the most severe decelerations in modern times.
If no measures are taken, he says, developing countries will be the most vulnerable to economic recession.
Both Moore and UN Secretary Genaral Kofi Annan are calling for a new round to help create more jobs, strengthen the multilateral trading system and benefit countries battered by poverty.
