China's Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation Shi Guangsheng said this morning's meeting focused both on APEC's complete support for a new round of WTO trade talks and on specific procedures to facilitate trade.
Shi Guangsheng said: "APEC representives and ministers have had very good discussions. We have talked about how to support a new round of WTO talks. The new round will be launched next month at the fourth trade ministers' meeting. We have also discussed details of the APEC individual Action plan and details for trade facilitation measures."
At today's talks, the ministers also revised the Osaka Action Agenda and the collective action plan. Responding to the global economic slowdown, the APEC members agreed that a consensus on trade liberalisation was vital to international trade.
The US trade representative was also optimistic after this morning's talks.
