Cross-Straits Links to be Promoted after WTO Entry
WED, SEP 26, 2001
The Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council held its monthly press conference today (Wednesday). Its spokesman Zhang Mingqing urged Taiwan authorities to take concrete steps to open trade across the Taiwan Straits. He also expressed condolences for the victims of the typhoon that swirled across Taiwan last week.

At the press conference, Zhang Mingqing said after China's entry into the World Trade Organisation, Taiwan will also be allowed to join as Chinese Taipei. This, he noted will further promote cross-straits economic exchanges.

Zhang Mingqing, Spokesman of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said: "After the two sides both join the WTO, according to WTO rules of trade facilitation, Taiwan island should open the three 'direct links'---direct mail, trade, and air and shipping services. It should also remove the barriers hampering Taiwan businesspeople investing in the mainland. I think the key to the problem is whether Taiwan will take concrete measures in this regard."

Zhang Mingqing also extended his condolences to the victims of Typhoon Nari, which struck Taiwan. And he pointed out that the mainland's offer to help has been refused by the island.

Zhang Mingqing said: " On Aug 22nd, the Red Cross Society of China telegraphed the Taiwan Red Cross, asking them for a list of most-needed relief materials. But they said that typhoon is easy come, easy go, and they didn't need any assistance at that time."

Zhang Mingqing expressed his hope that Taiwan compatriots will soon recover from the damage. He also extended festival greetings as there are just five more days until China's traditional Mid-autumn Festival."
