Singapore Minister for Health Lim Hng Kiang Wednesday urged the Singaporeans to remain vigilant over SARS although the anti-SARS situation have improved.

At a press conference on the evening of May 6, Lim said that there have been no new cases reported over the past 10 days and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has lifted traveller's notification for Singapore from a travel advisory to a travel alert on May 6.

There are no new probable cases reported in Singapore Wednesday and the latest date of onset of a probable case was April 27. There have been no cases detected since then.

He said that Singpaore's strategy to contain SARS is working well and stressed that what Singapore has achieved in the battle against SARS will be undermined if somebody acts carelessly and irresponsibly, noting 25 persons have been found in breach of the home quarantine orders imposed on them.

Singapore has implemented a national strategy against SARS on four prongs of overall precautions, early detection, strict isolation and adequate protection.

The minister said that SARS patients who have been discharged will have their home quarantine extended from 14 to 21 days. "We have to be vigilant and have to have several incubation periods to make sure the infection is flushed out of the system," he said.

He also urged Singaporeans to take the opportunity to improve environmental sanitation and raise the level of their personal hygiene.

Up to May 7, a total of 204 SARS probable cases were reported in Singapore, of which 27 died, 26 remain hospitalized.
