Mexican authorities take action against SARS
   FRI, APR 25, 2003

Mexican authorities have launched an action plan to prevent the entry into the country of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the local press reported on Thursday.

Sanitary personnel were checking flights arriving from countries or regions where SARS outbreaks had occurred, said Pablo Kuri, director of the Epidemiology Department of the Health Ministry,

Doctors and immigration personnel of Mexico's 32 states were participating in the plan to cope with SARS, Kuri said. State governments had selected health centers near airports to attend suspected cases.

Authorities will attempt a rapid detection of infected people to prevent the spread of the disease in Mexico, he said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), SARS has killed 251 people worldwide.

Kuri said that in Mexico 18 suspected SARS cases had proved not infected. The most recent was a woman in Guadalajara, in the western state of Jalisco, who had arrived from an area of risk.
