HK health-care workers fighting SARS will be well-protected
   TUE, APR 29, 2003

The Hospital Authority (HA) will ensure sufficient protective measures for health-care workers fighting SARS, Hong Kong Hospital Authority Chairman Leong Che-hung said on a local radio program Monday.

Expressing his sorrow over the death of a 38-year-old Tuen Mun Hospital nurse who was the first front-line worker to succumb to the virus, Leong said his death will not undermine the authority's determination to beat the disease, only drive it to fight harder.

From Monday, the authority will send experts to all hospitals to ensure that there is sufficient protective equipment and precautionary measures, he said.

Speaking on the same radio program, the late nurse's wife thanked Tuen Mun Hospital's Intensive Care Unit staff for their work in trying to save her husband.

She also encouraged health-care workers to keep up their good work.

Meanwhile, Tuen Mun Hospital has opened a Citibank account to collect donations from the public to help the late nurse's family.
