WHO: Guangdong working well to control spread of SARS |
|
World Health Organization officials are continuing their hunt for clues on the mysterious flu-like disease, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, in China's Guangdong province. They say Guangdong has worked efficiently to control the spread of the disease.
After meeting local medical officials and experts on Friday, WHO officials held a news conference. They admitted being impressed with the Chinese experts working to control SARS.
Major hospitals in Guangdong have set up departments to deal with fever patients to find out the causes as early as possible. The number of SARS patients in March was half that of February.
Wang Zhiqiong, vice director of Provincial Health Department, said: "154 cases were found in the first ten days of March, another 128 cases in the next 10 days. Only 88 were reported in the last 10 days of March. The decrease is very significant. In addition, infections of medical staff have been controlled."
South China's Guangdong province is the hardest-hit area in the country. WHO officials have been visiting local medical institutions to investigate.
