The first Fatah conference in 20 years has elected a new leadership. Palestinian television announced that 14 new members have won seats on Fatah's central committee. Four previous members were also re-elected.
The new members include Mohammed Dahlan, former security chief in the Gaza Strip. He is considered the most outspoken critic of Hamas.
Other newly elected members include Marwan al-Barghouthi, a West Bank-based Fatah leader who is serving a sentence in an Israeli prison, and Saeb Erekat, a well-known peace negotiator.
Fatah launched its sixth general convention for the first time on the Palestinian territories last week. The 5th convention was held in Tunis, 20 years ago. Over 2,000 Fatah members voted to elect 18 members for the central committee and 120 members for the revolutionary council.
