NATO's new Secretary General, says the problems in Afghanistan cannot be solved by military means alone.

During his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, a broader perspective and a comprehensive approach is needed.

After meeting with Karzai in Kabul, Rasmussen said that military efforts and a strong international commitment to reconstruction were both essential for the peace of the country.

He also said troops would do their best to secure the coming Afghan elections.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO's Secretary General, said, "NATO and ISAF is here to protect your elections and ensure the best possible security. What we need are credible elections that reflect the will of the people."

Rasmussen expressed regret for NATO's killing of civilians in Afghanistan.
