The guided missile destroyer USS Stout is the sixth American warship to call at Georgia's Black Sea ports since last August.

Wednesday's show of US support comes amid persistent tension between the US and Russia over last year's regional conflict and over Georgia's future.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev inspected his country's ground and naval forces in the Novor-ossi-ysk region of southern Russia.

Medvedev said he hopes the lessons of the Russia-Georgia conflict will be remembered by those who are "trying to change the existing orders".
