A top Iranian cleric says some of the detained Iranian staffers of the British Embassy in Tehran will be put on trial. Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati's announcement came a day after the EU demanded Iran release the staffers who were detained on June 27th.

During a Friday prayer sermon in Tehran, Jannati accused Britain of playing a role in instigating widespread protests after the country's presidential election.

During a Friday prayer sermon in Tehran, Jannati accused Britain of playing a role in instigating widespread protests after the country's presidential election. Jannati said the detained staffers had "made confessions". He did not say how many staffers will be tried or on what charges.

Earlier, Iranian officials said all but one of the eight embassy personnel arrested had been released. But EU officials said they believed more than one is still being held.

In London, a Foreign Office spokeswoman said British officials are "very concerned" about Jannati's comments. And she added that they are investigating.
