There were 142 passengers on board, including three infants, and 11 crew. Most were from Comoros, and the French Foreign Ministry says there were 66 French nationals. The plane was flying from Sana'a to Moroni, the capital of the main island of the archipelago. Officials say weather conditions were rough, but there could be other factors.

Mohammed Abdul Qader, deputy chief of Yemeni Civil Aviation, said, "At the time of the crash the weather was so bad, when the plane was approaching Moroni airport, the wind speed was 61 kilometres per hour and the sea was a bit stormy. For the moment we have assigned a committee for follow up, headed by the minister of transport."
