US President Barack Obama is planning to send an ambassador to Syria to fill a post that has been vacant for four years.

The White House says Obama's decision is aimed at fulfilling his promise to show more US engagement in the Arab world.

Robert Gibbs, White House Spokesman, said, "We have had a series of meetings with administration officials and Syrian leadership. I think this strongly reflects the administration's recognition of the role Syria plays, and the hope of the role that the Syrian government can play constructively to promote peace and stability in the region. And it continues the president's call to be more fully engaged in the region."
