A US official says the United States will do whatever is necessary for the security of its allies.
But he said on Tuesday the US has no plans to invade the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or overthrow its government by force.
Washington's special envoy Stephen Bosworth was speaking at the annual dinner of the Korea Society in New York. He urged the DPRK to return to six party talks.
Stephen Bosworth, US Special Envoy for DPRK Policy, said, "Notwithstanding North Korea's recent actions, we and our partners in the talks remain open through meaningful dialogue and serious negotiation. As we have indicated to Pyongyang, the United States also remains open to bilateral dialogue and negotiation as part of this multilateral effort."
