Although the real cause of the crash of Air France Flight 447 is still unknown, the plane's external speed monitors have become the focus of discussion.

On Tuesday, Air France promised to replace all such sensors on its A330 and 340 planes.

The Alter union, a French pilot union, has urged its members to refuse to fly unless at least two of the three speed, or pitot, sensors on every problem plane have been replaced. It says the airline should have grounded all A330 and 340 jets pending the replacement.

The president of Alter, Bruno Sinatti, confirmed that the new pitot sensors were less sensitive to frost and so posed fewer risks.

Bruno Sinatti, President of Alter, said, "All we are saying to the captain and the pilot is to check that the planes have had at least two of these sensors modified out of three."
