Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France got through to the second round of the Madrid Open. He scored a straight sets victory over Russia's Marat Safin on Monday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France got through to the second round of the Madrid Open. He scored a straight sets victory over  Russia's Marat Safin on Monday.

Safin says this is his last year on the ATP tour. But he found his time at the Madrid event short-lived as he was beaten by Tsonga. The Frenchman broke Safin's serve in the 12th game of the second set and won the match 6-4, 7-5.

Mardy Fish survived his first round clash with Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The unseeded American won his match in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4 to book a place against Ivan Ljubicic in the next round. The Croatian defeated Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-3, 6-2 with relative ease in their first round encounter.
