The 13th Africa Union summit has opened in the northern Libyan city of Sirte. Issues such as ensuring food supplies, as well as peace and security in Africa are likely to top the agenda.

Leaders of AU member states are expected to discuss how to step up investment in agriculture to meet food challenges in the continent.

Meanwhile, the anticipated creation of the AU Authority -- widely seen as a step towards African integration -- will also be under discussion.

Heads of states will also discuss various other issues. Among them how to strengthen the role of the AU in the prevention, management and resolution of election disputes as well as violent conflicts in Africa.
