China is showing its determination to crack down on drug-related crimes as countries around the world mark international Anti-drug Day. Although China has made progress in its fight against drug crimes -- grave challenges still remain.
As drug crimes become more rampant and sophisticated around the globe, China has been toughening its response to the gathering menace.
Police in Beijing say they seized over two-hundred kilograms of drugs between January and May this year.
That amount is three times the figure during the same period last year.
The capital launched an anti-drug campaign at the beginning of April.
It has been intensifying checks on international air travelers and cargo. Especially since this channel is increasingly being used among traffickers.
As a result of the crackdown, the number of drug-related crimes witnessed a major drop.
However, judicial officials say the city still faces severe challenges in its anti-drug campaign. And they warn that public places are gradually becoming hot-beds for drug crimes.
