Special Report: Air France jet vanishes |
The World Meteorological Organization says their Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay Program could not have prevented Air France Flight 447 from crashing.
It says that data provided by the program would have at best provided information on the weather conditions before its signal was cut.
More than five thousand aircraft collect data under the WMO's AMDAR. But 3-30 Airbuses are generally not equipped with the WMO's devices.
The WMO says two jets are believed to have been in the same area half an hour before the Air France flight.
This could provide clues for the investigation. The two jets recorded the weather conditions, but were not equipped to automatically transmit information on turbulence.
