The 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Japan and South Korea have met for a closed-door meeting about the situation on the Korean peninsula.
A new Security Council resolution about the DPRK's recent nuclear tests was the main topic at Wednesday's meeting. Analysts say the new resolution may include sanctions against the DPRK.
The new Security Council resolution will also likely condemn the DPRK for violating the 2006 resolution which banned nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches.
It's also expected to reiterate the council's demand that no further tests be conducted, and urge Pyongyang to return to the six-party talks.
Both China and Russia insist that the Security Council give Pyongyang a chance to show "goodwill" before any expanded sanctions and enforcement measures take effect.
Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.
He says the goal of the Council's action on Pyongyang's nuclear test is to eventually achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
