US President George W. Bush has arrived in Brussels to begin a five-day fence-mending visit to Europe, which will also take him to Germany and Slovakia.

Bush will meet European Union and NATO leaders during two days of talks in Brussels. Bush aims to improve relations with Europe early in his second term, and end the serious strains in the transatlantic relationship caused by the war in Iraq. He is also expected to shore up European support for the new governments of Iraq and Afghanistan, and to advance the US vision of settling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Security has been tightened in Brussels for Bush's visit. As expected, public protests took place before his arrival in Brussels on Sunday with both the far left and far right on the streets. The right are wanting him to pull US troops out of Europe and the left are criticizing what they say is his disdain for international law.
