Ten years ago, former Chinese President Jiang Zemin put forward an eight-point proposal on the cross-strait relations. But this historic initiative was tabled when the Taiwanese authorities did not deviate seriously from the One China principle. With Chen Shuibian being the leader of Taiwan, the DPP, however, is sparing no efforts to seek secession from the mainland. The Taiwanese regime refuses to accept the 1992 One China consensus. Tensions begin to escalate across the Taiwan Strait. The mainland says it no longer trusts Chen Shuibian. Taiwan, at the same time, fears that its economy is being hollowed out and that missiles deployed along the coast of the mainland pose a serious threat to its security. It therefore wants tax payers to cover hefty arms purchase from America. To take a closer look at the complexity of the cross-strait ties, we are now joined by Mr. Tao Wenzhao and Mr. Russell leigh Mose.
