This year, the Shanghai Yuyuan Garden Tea Festival is focusing on the role of tea drinking as an essential element of Chinese cultural tradition. At Sunday's opening ceremony, an exhibition was launched to display the varieties of tea that won high recognition during a recent nationwide evaluation. Among the distinctive teas are traditional varieties produced in Guizhou, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces.

Festival goers are treated to the tantalizing fragrance of freshly prepared tea drinks at the venue. Time-honored tea leaf varieties are on offer, including West Lake Longjing, Wuyi Crimson Gown and Yongchun Buddha Hand.

As part of the opening, the Shanghai Children's Tea Club staged a performance of the traditional preparation of tea drinks. It turned out to be a comprehensive presentation of China's long-standing tea culture. Both locals and tourists were deeply impressed by the show.

The Yuyuan Garden Tea Festival will last until early May. In coming weeks, visitors will enjoy a series of public lectures on tea culture, as well as a tea culture forum and a tea preparation contest.
