Feng Xiaogang's highly anticipated new year film "Assembly" has just been released across China. The first day box office of the film hit a high of 15 million yuan, or about 2 million US dollars.

"Assembly" was released on Thursday. The peak showings after five o'clock, when workers clock off, saw packed houses in almost every theater where the film was screened. Many audiences were deeply moved by the war flick, which depicts heroism and brotherhood between soldiers in the heat of battle.

The film tells the story of the commander of a squad who, as the only survivor of his team from the battlefield, seeks the bones of his soldiers, until they are finally honoured posthumously as martyrs. The film also highlights the spirit and immortality of every individual who sacrifices his life in a righteous battle.

This movie also represents a breakthrough for Feng Xiaogang, whose name was previously synonymous with feel good comedies made for the New Year season.
