Former South Korean president and Nobel peace prize winner Kim Dae-jung passed away today (Tuesday). He was 85.

Local media reports said he died of heart failure. Kim served as president from 1998 to 2003.

Internationally, Kim is best known for his historic handshake and embrace with leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Kim-Jong-il in June 2000, at the very first summit meeting between South Korea and the DPRK.

The meeting was the culmination of the "Sunshine Policy" that won Kim the Nobel prize.
