 China's top government advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, will hold the First Session of its tenth National Committee next week in Beijing. Early today, the first group of 26 CPPCC members arrived in Beijing by train. Other CPPCC members will take 15 trains today from more than 10 provinces to get to Beijing in time for the coming annual meeting.
About 2,238 National Committee members will attend the first session of the 10th CPPCC National Committee. There will be more members from the business sector than ever before attending the meeting of the CPPCC next week. After making major contributions to the nation's wealth, Chinese private businesspeople are now learning to share political responsibilities with other Chinese citizens. About 100 or so private entrepreneurs are now members of the 10th CPPCC National Committee, compared with a mere 23 in the Eighth CPPCC National Committee and just one in the 7th CPPCC National Committee.
The growing presence of businesspeople on the political stage is a result of President Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" Theory, which calls for the Communist Party of China to better represent China's most advanced productive force, its advanced culture and the most fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.
