Chinese president Jiang Zemin has stressed the importance of developing the non-state-owned sector while ensuring the dominance of the state-owned sector in the national economy.
Jiang made the remark Sunday while speaking at a group discussion of the ongoing Fourth Session of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.
Among his audience are CPPCC National Committee members from the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, an organization of non-state-owned businesses.
The president called the non-state-owned sector an important part of the socialist market economy, saying that its development can help mobilize idle resources of the society and strengthen the vitality of the national economy.
However, Jiang pointed out that problems in the non-state-owned sector should not be ignored.
Businesspeople active in the non-state-owned sector should be supported, encouraged, helped, guided and educated so that they will combine their personal goals with national interests, the president said.
